Unai Canela

Filmmaker, environmentalist, and anthropology student

Alone in Greenland

Unai first traveled to Greenland when he was 13. He accompanied his dad on assignment photographing the melting glaciers. During their trip, they also encountered muskoxen. These mammoth-like creatures caught the young boy’s attention right away. Six years later, Unai was a student of anthropology, but his passion for animals continued. He decided to follow his dream and returned to Greenland. For months, he embarked on a formidable solo journey in the Arctic tundra. While tracking the muskoxen, he camped in front of glaciers, walked across frozen lakes, and slept under the Aurora Borealis. Unai also became aware of the fragility of this ecosystem. He learned about the melting ice cap, which has a crucial effect on our planet’s changing climate. But there is one animal that he didn’t see: the polar bear. So Unai decided to venture out in search of the bears, traveling to one of the most remote places on earth. He stayed in a cabin in front of the frozen ocean covered in ice where polar bears roam. The search was not easy, and after weeks, the bears still hadn’t appeared. Then, he decided to seek help from his dad.
